It’s been amazing October weather and the early muzzloader season is open! Are you out there? The mornings might be a bit nippy (I’ve seen some frost) but the afternoons are delightful. When can you sit in a tree stand without a coat?!
The white-throated sparrows have arrived on their southern migration and their songs of “Old Sam Peabody Peabody Peabody” fill the morning air at sunrise. In the evening the chorus consists of chips and chatters as everyone heads to the brush to roost for the evening.
Just as it got light I watched a barred owl fly off from a tree in front of me and calling in a way that makes me think it was a young-of-the-year as it flew up into the pines. A broad-winged hawk came in a bit later and startled a gray squirrel. The deer saw me as I walked in to my stand in the dark (I heard them snort but never saw anything).
I hope you have an opportunity to enjoy the outdoors this week – whether hunting or not. It’s going to get a bit cooler but still wonderful weather.
We are nearing the 4th week of October and the rut activity will be picking up. Our bucks are right on track but the females we are following are moving more than expected. Check out the Rut Tracker.
